Day entirely dedicated to discovering the most sacred places in the life of Saint Francis, with an expert guide who will recount the spiritual and artistic history of the Saint.
The Basilica of Saint Francis
Visit to the Upper Basilica, a UNESCO heritage site, with its Giotto frescoes that narrate the life of the Saint in 28 scenes of extraordinary beauty. Each fresco depicts episodes from Francis's life: from renouncing his father's goods to preaching to the birds. Descent to the Lower Basilica, more intimate and evocative, where the remains of Saint Francis rest. Contemplation of the Tomb of the Poor Man, a destination for millions of pilgrims every year. The crypt also holds the tombs of Francis's first companions: Brother Leo, Brother Rufino, Brother Angelo, and Brother Masseo.
The Tomb of Carlo Acutis
Special opportunity to pay homage to Carlo Acutis, the blessed of the digital generation, buried in Assisi. A bridge between the holy past and the contemporary present. Carlo, who died at 15 in 2006, has become a symbol of modern sanctity, venerated by young people worldwide.
The Basilica of Saint Clare
Visit to the complex dedicated to Saint Clare, founder of the Order of the Poor Clares and devoted follower of Francis. You will admire the wooden Crucifix of San Damiano which, according to tradition, spoke to the Saint saying "Francis, go and repair my house." The basilica also preserves the body of Saint Clare and testimonies of her contemplative life.
Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porziuncola
Transfer to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in the 16th century around the small Porziuncola, the church where Saint Francis founded the Franciscan Order in 1209. This place represents the spiritual heart of Franciscanism. The tiny chapel remains intact within the enormous Baroque basilica, preserving the atmosphere of simplicity that Francis loved. Here Francis lived his last years and passed away on October 3, 1226.
San Damiano
Visit to the convent of San Damiano, where Saint Francis received his vocation and composed the Canticle of the Creatures. Here Saint Clare lived for 42 years with her sisters. The church has remained largely intact over the centuries, preserving the contemplative atmosphere of the Saint's time. The cloister, garden, and cells tell the story of the austere and joyful life of the Poor Clares.
