Jewish Ghetto

The tour begins at the Church of the Gesù, a masterpiece from the late 16th century and the ideal starting point to understand the transition from medieval to Baroque Rome. From here, we reach Piazza Mattei, where the elegant Turtle Fountain, designed by Giacomo della Porta and completed by Bernini, showcases the refinement of Renaissance taste flourishing in a city still influenced by medieval spirituality and simplicity.

The route continues to the Ancient Jewish Ghetto in the Sant’Angelo district, established in 1555 by Pope Paul IV with the bull Cum nimis absurdum. Within its walls—high and narrow like those of medieval fortresses—lived a hard-working community, keeper of ancient traditions and witness to a multicultural Rome. Via della Reginella still preserves the charm of that era, with its towers, arches, and humanist inscriptions.

Admire the House of Lorenzo Manili, a testimony to humanist Rome, the Portico d’Ottavia, which in the Middle Ages became the city’s fish market, and the Theatre of Marcellus, reused in the 14th century as a noble residence and defensive fortress. The visit concludes at the Great Synagogue (1907), symbol of civil and spiritual rebirth after centuries of segregation.

Tiber Island

The walk continues toward Tiber Island, connected to the mainland by the Ponte Fabricio (62 BC), the only ancient Roman bridge still in use. During the Middle Ages, the island became a crossroads of Christian faith and charity: the ancient Temple of Aesculapius, god of medicine, was replaced by the Hospital of the Fatebenefratelli, which continues a thousand-year-old tradition of healing and compassion.

The Church of San Bartolomeo all’Isola, founded in the 10th century, preserves the relics of medieval saints and martyrs and embodies the extraordinary overlap of pagan and Christian sacredness. Its walls, bathed by the waters of the Tiber, evoke the spiritual and industrious atmosphere of medieval Rome.

Trastevere

Crossing the Ponte Cestio leads to the historic district of Trastevere, once the center of mercantile and artisan life in medieval Rome. Among its cobbled streets and tower houses, you can still feel the echoes of ancient guilds and religious brotherhoods that brought life to this quarter.

The visit includes the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, an ancient early Christian foundation restored in the Middle Ages, with its magnificent 9th-century apse mosaic, 12th-century Gothic ciborium, and the celebrated marble statue of Saint Cecilia by Stefano Maderno.

Then visit the Church of San Francesco a Ripa, built in the 13th century, which houses the cell where Saint Francis of Assisi stayed, and the final, deeply moving masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini: the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni.

The last stop is Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the heart and spiritual center of the district, dominated by the basilica of the same name—the first church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary—adorned with splendid medieval golden mosaics that radiate timeless light.
